Name: Laurel

Latin name: Laurus nobilis

Foliage: Perennial

Mature height: Planted on the garden, usually we should see as a shrub but with the years if we let it growing alone without pruning it will rich to 49 ft. tree height or it can form a dense shrub with the shoots that sprout from the base of the plant

Description: The Laurel is native from mediterranean zone where it grows wild in many places.
Apart of his green dark foliage, perennial and attractive, his leafs and flowers are very aromatics. Flowers appears in spring yellowish, that in female plants converts in black berrys.
Out of the mediterranean climate it is very sensitive to the frost and strong sun can burn his leafs.


Soil and Location: In any garden ground but it prefers the looses and coldes, protected of very cold airs. At the sun or at the shade.

Pruning: In spring clear out the stems and the leafs damaged.
For the topiary art that is for giving it one particular decorative form cut ot in summer.



Reproduction: They reproduce very quickly, in summer by cuttings ot by layers, as well we can extract with care the suckers that sprout on the plants base and obtain new plants.

Be careful not to confuse the Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) with the Cherry Laurel edo English Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) who are quite alike. This last plant es toxic for the people on case of ingestion.

The laurel is the tree with greeks made his “laurel crowns” and crowned his heros as fame and wisdom symbol.
